Nathan Lee Shepherd is 2 years old!

Happy Birthday to Nathan! My cute little boy is 2 years old yesterday. He might be confused that everyday is present day for him. We still have a gift for him because he was so preoccupied with his previous presents. I never realized how wonderfully easy it is to shop for little boys! I love it. There is no inappropriate makeup to confiscate, no dolls lacking in the clothing department floating around the house, its so great! Balls, bikes, basket ball hoops, baseball bats, and blocks . . . if it starts with a "B" we have it at our house now! Which leads to one of my favorite things, organizing equipment! I have organized Nathan's closet to hold all his great gear, so he can see it and get it. I have gotten rid of all the baby things that he has out grown so there is room for stuff that he is presently using!
We are going to the zoo on Jan 1st to celebrate his birthday, Randy was feeling poorly yesterday so we postponed it for his next day off. We are hopefully that some family can make it too.
Happy birthday wonderful little boy! You are so full of personality and fun and love! Yesterday after he opened his basketball hoop, he spent a lot time trying to make a basket, we were watching him and encouraging him, he never gave up, I asked Randy if he should lift him up to help him make it. He shook his head no. After more missed shots he finally made it and we cheered and clapped. He smiled so big, He was so proud of himself. He laughed and laughed. Then he kept shooting and he was making it basket after basket! He kept shooting until he couldn't lift his arms up, it was so cute. He was so tired, we ended up waiting to eat his birthday brownies until today!

Christmas tree fever

I am going a little crazy. If I could in any way justify buying another tree this year, I would. I have found a flocked tree that I love. The branches are so real looking and the snow on it looks so real, and its not everywhere so it even looks like fresh snow. I just love the way it would look with all of my colorful decorations, and all the kids crafted ones, even a homemade popcorn string thing. I really love Christmas trees, so much so now that I have toyed with the idea of working at the Orange patch so I can learn more about decorating them and just being around them. I am trying very hard not to obsess, but would it be weird to just redo my tree every couple of days? I feel like I cheated a little this year with my new tree, with how easy it was to put up. I used to dread the hours it would take to carefully place each branch and arrange it, then when the 150 branches were in place put up the lights (all 5 strands), pray that each bulb would light. Now, we decorate. This year it was all done in under 30 mins. and that includes opening the box and reading the directions. Wow! I really do love my Christmas tree! But you better keep a close watch on me, I just might not be able to hold myself back from another! Merry Christmas

I am thankful

Do you ever find that you just need a good dose of being thankful?
I am thankful for my husband.
I am thankful for my children.
I am thankful for the gospel.
I am thankful for tender mercies that show me Heavenly Father is aware of me and my sweet family.
I am thankful for scriptures and general conferences.
I am thankful for a living Prophet, and a wise Stake President, Bishop and Home Teachers.
I am thankful for the spirit of Christmas in the air.
I am thankful for good friends.
I am thankful for my job.

My tree is decorated!

I am happy to report that my tree is up and beautiful. We have been enjoying the tree with just the lights on for a few days and Saturday we finally felt ready to decorate! We decided on the white, silver, and gold for this year. I just love the way I feel when I walk into the room or see the tree when I am passing by. Nathan is loving redecorating every few hours, and when he wakes up in the morning its fun to watch him run into the room and sit down and just look at the tree. He says Christmas tree pretty well. I just love celebrating Christmas. Hope your days of holiday preparations are less stressful and more joyful. Merry Christmas.

Upholstery class

Before

I am taking an upholstery class with a dear friend of mine. We are having a great time and the class just goes by way to fast. Here is what I am doing with my kitchen chairs. I am quite thrilled with the results. Thank you Randy for taking care of our children while I am away on Thursday nights. After

Ready to put up the tree!

I have been so ready to put up my new Christmas tree. It is the tree I've been dreaming of for years! I love it so much. But every one wants to help put it up and we haven't been able to make our sweet little family's schedule come together to get this tree up. So I put a deadline on it and tonight is the night. Even if its just me. The tree will come up! Can't wait to post a picture. Special thanks to my great friend Marcy who inspired me to create amazing trees each year after one especially bad " Charlie Brown tree" year. It has made all the difference in my Christmas season to look forward to putting up a gorgeous tree (or two).

Last year I bought great stockings and Christmas lights and we have loved them. This year I got the tree and a great wreath for the front door. I also hope to add to the Willow Nativity I started collecting two years back.

This year we are also starting something new. I bought the kids each a new Christmas book to have on the shelf to read during the Christmas season. I am giving them out tonight! Thanks to my sister Tam for this great idea! I just love it and had to start it this year!

Our Family pictures finally came today!

I can't even begin to describe how happy I am to finally have professional pictures of our family done. I am so happy with how they turned out. I can't wait to get a wall of pictures done. This is one thing we are going to keep up with every year. I can't believe how fast Nathan has grown and how beautiful my girls are. Merry Christmas!

Saturday at the Zoo

The girls had Thursday and Friday off of School. I couldn't manage to get time off myself on those days so we went to the zoo Saturday morning and made great memories with Nathan's first trip to the zoo. We loved how we had to tear him away from each animal we saw so we could go see the next. I really think his favorites were the monkeys, the giraffes and the elephants. As for the girls and I, we loved watching Nathan! What a great day! My little flamingo girls.
We watched the elephants eat up close at their new elephant observation area. This cute one kept throwing grass on her back. We loved this spot.
Nathan can't stop looking at the turtles on the logs at the entrance.
All the animals were so active, it was so cool and breezy. The otter family was a hoot!
My stroller broke right after we paid for our year pass, luckily, just a few feet away from the stroller rental. Time for a new stroller. I guess I put too many miles on it looking at ducks with Nathan on the canal! This silly thing had no space for stuff, and wanted to tip and scream downhills. Crazy thing!
Hey Cutie, your are sure growing up fast. I can't believe how big you are!

Let's take a long walk and quack while we're at it

Nathan has discovered the world of animal sounds, especially ducks. I've been running with Nathan along the canal in the mornings, and to distract him we talk about all the wildlife we see and hear. His favorite are ducks right now. A very close second is dogs. But I think he loves the quacking sound ducks make and that they swim in the water, but mostly that he can quack. And pretty darn loud. Unfortunately,we noticed this new love of quacking during sacrament meeting last week, in the really quiet part during the sacrament. Its hard to miss a one year old quacking when it's that quiet. Krista has a bird on one of her sweaters and was quietly showing it to Nathan when he got really excited and started jumping and quacking. Goooo ducks!!!!!

The Salt River is NOT Kayaking 101!

I just couldn't keep you guessing too long about how the kayaking went. You know I am still alive because I have posted since. The real worry ended up being about Randy. We went down the first rapids and I crashed into trees and bushed and rocks, but just kept paddling, (did I mention that I am very sore?) Mark (the pro) yelled out to me what to do, which is always paddle faster then the currents. I don't know if that is physically possible though. It was heart pounding and very satisfying to know I did not tip. The most worried I was on the trip was when we all made it around the bend of the rapids and Randy didn't come out. I've seen movies like that, where the husband doesn't make it. We waited for a while, which involves back paddling, a new place to be sore from. Finally Mark went to go see what was going on, when the sunscreen that was in Randy's kayak came floating past Sharee and I. That did not make me feel any better. After another 15mins they both came around the bend and were laughing. So things worked out and I was not the one that tipped, added bonus! It really was a great time and we left so early that we never did see a trashy tuber. I would absolutely go again. Sorry no pictures, river and camera incompatible.

Kelsey's haircut

I just gave Kelsey a haircut. Its the first one I've done for her all by myself. She asked me to help her take her hair out of her bun and a ton of baby fine hair fell into my lap. I was kinda startled by this. What kind of disease makes a seven-year-old's hair fall out? Well, it's not anything like that. Just plain old chlorine from all the swimming she has done this summer it just caught up to her ends. Boy were they blond. Anyway, I'll post a picture after she does it tomorrow, its time for her to go to bed. Wow, Krista just asked me to cut her hair too. Look at that trust. I love it. She wants a cute little bob or something way out of my league. I just have to take her to my hair lady. What fun it is to have a cute built in friend. . . and babysitter. Krista you are awesome! I love you.

Mountain biking 101

I went riding with my hardcore mountain biking husband on Saturday. We got started on a trail up on power road. He knows the name of it. I will admit that I am a chicken, this isn't anything new and you'd think my sweet husband would remember. So as I am stopped looking over the first downhill wondering which rocky portion of the hill would be my undoing, my amazingly brave husband is two or three hills ahead of me. I finally decide what to do and walked that hill and then started riding. I did surprise myself that I didn't fall over every little bump on the trail. Wow, this is kinda fun. Then the next downhill, smaller but full of more cracks and erosion areas. This is not as fun. Randy comes to coach me through it will words like, "this is nothing, this is just the trail to the trail. Your bike was made for this and this is nothing." I know he meant to inspire me, but . . .
so the good news is that I usually talk myself out of being a chicken and I did. I rode through all of the hills I was so afraid of and did improve enough for Randy to say that he wants to take me out again soon.
My next adventure in being brave comes this Saturday when we go kayaking down the Salt River with some friends. I hope I don't tip. At least the rapids arn't rapids and the water is only knee deep. Definitely kayaking 101 material. Also, this is taking place so early in the morning that we will miss the PG-13 tubers. I am kinda excited. I'll tell you all about it.
Note: I am getting camera batteries today so I can finally download all my pictures and take more!

And the winner is . . .

Krista Shepherd! Krista won the t-shirt design competition for the school shirt this year! I can't wait to post a picture of her design! We are so proud of her. When I got off work on Thursday evening and saw her wearing it I was thinking wow that looks familiar then I saw the look on her face and I said,"No, Way!" She said,"Yes Way!" and we all jumped and screamed until Nathan started crying. She won a t-shirt. And on the same day she also became the student council rep for her classroom! Congratulations Krista, we are so proud of you! You are awesome!

the great deer hunt

I love my husband. I really think he is great. I love that he can go hunting and not need to take me with him. I love that he is successful! I love even more that he was so successful in the first 20 mins. of his hunt, so that he was able to come home to us quickly. I especially love that he brings home the deer looking like something I would be happy to pick up at the local supermarket. It makes a world of difference to me. I love that he picks deer that is better for food then pride. (younger more tender, very less gamey, but very small antlers) I love that he is thankful and respectful for the life of the animal. While we process the meat together, and it does take a while, I just repeat to myself silently- its just hamburger, its just hamburger, its just hamberger. Please don't tell Randy. Its just between us.

I love Nursery!

So . . . be so very careful with what you ask for. I am the new nursery leader in our ward and I absolutely love it. I can't believe how quickly I have grown to love these sweet little ones. I wake up at night with new ideas of things to do. Randy is quick to tell me why most of them won't work. Or why they are against the buildings code. Rules rules rules. I just want these precious children to love to go to church and to know that I love them and Jesus loves them. I wonder how much they get out of a lesson, but love to see how much of a full one they can stand before the wiggles get the best of them. I have to say, I am quite impressed with these sweet little ones. I am very blessed. I do believe I have the best calling. I used to say there was one I wanted to try more, but I am convinced otherwise. I was sick yesterday, and it was heartbreaking to miss. I just can't wait to get back on Sunday. I don't care that I have to lay down for 5 minutes when I get home. Its so worth it.

fun stuff

Its been a fun summer. The kids and I went to Colorado this summer to see my mom. We finally convinced Aunt Emily to come with us and had a great time. We swam almost everyday I didn't work at the big public pools with the slides and diving boards. Love 'em! I especially love not having to take care of them!
I just finished rearranging the furniture in our tiny place, I can't believe I pulled it off. Its especially fun because Randy said it just couldn't be done. So there. This weekend while he's away hunting I will switch the kids room's. We measured and Nathans room is quite a bit bigger. the girls just need more space. Oh, and we might end up having a redecorating shopping spree while he's away. (Not that he'd care, but it is a tradition to redo something while hes away)
Krista is going to get braces in the next month and we are so excited that the dentist Mom works for is going to do them. It sure helps a bunch.
Randy and I went and saw John Mayer in concert a few weeks ago. It was so great. Then luck of luck Marcy and I were able to score free tickets to Martina Mcbride for turning in old cell phones to Cricket. We went with our sweet husbands who love us lots.

Rock a bye

I love bedtime. Not for the calm and tranquility it brings when all my children are snug and sound asleep, but for the rock-a-byes that I have with my cute little boy. He doesn't snuggle me as much as I'd like him to, but for this time of day he lets me rock and rock with him. I think he knows it's either rock with mom or go to bed. However, sometimes he is just so tired that he doesn't even want to rock, just bed he points and whines. It's a little sad on those nights. Rejection. I don't mean to bring up Nathan's colic months again, but I finally found a bright side to that time (just 14 short months after the fact). It was rock-a-bye time all the time. I do mean all the time. I guess I kinda miss all that rocking. I find myself looking for the rocking chairs in the homes I visit. I have two, don't you have at least one?

Summer Time

Is summer time supposed to be busier then school time?

I found myself asking that question a lot in the last week. We are in full summer project mode! Krista is taking sewing and cooking lessons, and soon volleyball lessons and we must get her back into private violin lessons. Kelsey is taking piano lessons and cooking lessons and is begging me to let her take sewing lessons. Did I mention that I am the instructor of all these lessons? Okay, the volley ball camp is at the gym and I just have to pay for them and take her there. But you would be so proud of me, my girls are learning so much and we are just bonding, bonding, bonding. It was so funny, Krista said to me that since it took me one hour to make an apron, it would be so much faster for the two of us to make one. Ha ha ha. I have to say that I am not exactly an expert in any of these fields but I am proficient enough to teach a beginner. And except for the piano lessons they all take place during the magnificent and wonderful 3 hour nap time of Nathan boy.
I am kinda missing the things I use to do during that magical time of day. But that's another post. I will post krista's apron we made. It's gorgeous! It's a full length apron that is red with black pocka dots (yes, like a ladybug!) We finally made Kelsey one this morning and it's green and pink and brown stripes with hot pink rik rac - (as "edgy" as I want their rooms to be, Wendy)
We were in the kitchen making no bake cookies (I told you I'm not baking anymore) and I discovered that my apron is very frumpy and my girl's looked so fun, it's just gotta be my turn. So next I am making myself a gorgeous thing, fru fru as can be, I'm really excited!

We are swimming a lot, and my farmer's tan is already gone, even with the 50 spf. Thank you Mom for great tanning genes. (right Tawnya?)Its been so much fun to do all of these activites I find myself a little sad to go to work, cuz I don't want to miss out on all the fun.

Tuesdays and Fridays Meet Me at Rosa's

Those are salmon taco days for me now. I try to eat them twice a week or any kind of salmon 2x a week. Those omega 3 fatty acids are like best friends to my mood and waistline. I don't crave junk when I'm eating the omega 3's, just so ya know they are in avocados, walnuts and salmon also flax seed. I love to put ground flax seeds in my pancake mix in place of egg and oil most days. (I do think eggs and oil can be a healthy part of a good diet in moderation) However I only use olive oil and butter for added fats. If I am making a cake for friends I do use canola oil. But I even pop my popcorn in olive oil. I'm careful with my measuring of fats though, cuz calories still count! any way omega 3's are what kept me out of postpartum depression with Nathan, you know his colic certainly wasn't any help. Speaking of the cutie, time to put him to bed! Later Gator.

One of my favorite subjects to talk about

I love to cook. I do things a little differently though. I am always experimenting on my poor family, actually they think they are lucky. I love to tweek recipes or ideas of recipes or combinations of recipes, you get the idea. I also like to see if I can get away with healthier versions of my favorites without anyone knowing. I'm kinda the sneaky cook without doing the puree thing. I also know the trick that works well. The rule of eleven! I don't ever make my kids eat anything, however they are required to try everything at the table. One tiny bite is usually not to intimidating, and I'm not the kind of girl to serve brussel sprouts or chopped liver or anything I hated as a girl. (no offense if that's a personal fav of yours) It goes like this after 11 tastes your child's taste buds ajust to the new flavor and a lot of the time they will eat it , at least its worked well for me on many things. So I thought it would be fun to share a few of the things I do to avoid dieting yet still be healthy. I don't bake for the most part anymore, it was just something I have decided to give up for now. However,I do bake birthday cakes and brownies. Why? I don't like brownies and my family loves them, so brownie points for me. And I love to make homemade frosting and I have the sweetest little heart cake pans that layer in a cute stack. Its just too fun for birthdays, Valentines day, Activity day parties, Anniversaries, just so much. But aside from those things I just buy one of whatever I am craving and just try to eat half, I did say try. I think that is a big part of the whole eat healthy be healthy thing for me. Also, whenever I eat a bread product I go whole grain with as much fiber as possible. If you know me well at all you might even say I'm a fiber freak. Is that too much information?

Thank you Marcy

I just wanted to thank Marcy for reminding me this morning that I really needed to update my blog and just how many fun things I have to talk about. I have been working with her in the Nursery as a long term substitute and I think its the funnest calling I have ever not had. I wonder if I could lobby to get it "for real" . I gave the lesson on Sunday, and I have to say it was a lot easier and funner than the Relief Society lesson I was asked to give on Easter. I gave Randy a preview of my lesson and I think he was a little jealous that his lesson wasn't "I have a Body". I just can't believe how much fun church can be. Games, snacks, songs, stories, toys, did I mention the snacks? And I do have a few, I probably shouldn't admit that, but I think it's just one of the perks. The best reason for me to be in Nursery right now is that I am finally not roaming the halls during Sunday School and Relief Society. I am getting a full lesson now, thank you very much. oh, yeah, and I can make a mean back sling for the dolls. The little girls flock to me during toy time to get their Babies placed on their backs so they can get to work doing some serious playing. I just love it! Bishop, what do you say?

A hobbie or two

I am a thinker. I think before I buy and sometimes things sells out before I decide its right for me. Good for the budget. But I have been having a hard time figuring out what I want my hobbies to be,I love to cook and sew and take pictures and and and. I just need some focus. I think I want to get my girls room cute cute cute. They are old enough to take care of things and grateful enough to flip out when I do things for them so I am looking for cute projects for girls rooms that are more edgy then fru fru. I am also looking for fun ideas for hair accessories and projects that we could do together. Randy has enough softball nights that we can just turn those into girls night! Nathan luckily has a strict 7 pm bedtime. My sanity hinges upon it!

so let me know what ideas you have.

Picture taking class

I am so excited about a class on taking pictures of your kids! Its at domestic bliss and only $35! I am going to get my new camera soon and can't wait to post more more more. I love taking pictures, and still am in mourning over my last camera. I think this will be just the thing to pull me out of my slump! But don't expect too much from me, as I just pick up my pictures taken by the pros and I was not impressed, Nathan is just really tough to get a good picture of right now!

There was a really great picture of Nathan on one of Krista's posters for school. I loved hearing from Marcy Turley that her son said it was the favorite picture at school because Nathan's smile was just so great. Krista begged me to keep him in the picture and so I did. I later thought it was a good move, ya know how advertisers use puppies and babies to sell?

My camera broke and I just want to cry

I had an awesome camera and I just kept having problems with it so I took it back. I am not quite ready to buy a new one and I need to do some techy things to my computer to get it to accept my old camera. So sad. In the mean time I am working away at my dental hygiene job, loving it and using it as my great escape from my real job chasing Nathan through the house picking up whatever he tears apart while I am putting back the previous pull apart.

That sounds pretty sad. But really a lot has happened. I finished doing all Randy's Business taxes from when he started business and that is a huge monkey off both of our backs- as I am not the tax nag anymore! And all things paperwork and plumbing are taken care of for now! I think I need a raise!
Krista ran for Spirit Leader and did a great job with her campaigning and skit! I loved making the glittery poster and helping her friends and her organize the skit with the awesome song "Everybody Dance Now" from C & C Music Factory. She did not win however. The boy with the Barbie Car lipsinking to I'm a Barbie Girl was just a bit more funny. Funny rules in Elemenary School! Good Job Krista! Did I mention that I was the Campaign Manager? We painted friends cars and made awesome "Krista 4 spirit Leader" stickers that look like Buttons. We even had the crossing guard wearing one! Guess it helps when your super good friends! Thanks to Marcy and Cristie and Karen for letting me paint their car windows! Randy has it on his Red Truck and wont let me take it off, he's so proud!
Scary Nathan updates:
He can- open the frigde
turn on the water
open most doors including the sliding back door
climb on the kitchen table
move chairs to reach things better

Thats all my poor heart can take posting. I really should be taking a nap since he is. sigh.
Wendy- how on earth are you raising three? Bless you child

I spoke in church on Sunday. Funny, I thought it was just a quick get up and tell a few thoughts from Women's conference. But oops, when I saw my name on that paper, you know that tells you who is speaking? Good thing I had been reading my women's conference notes almost daily and was planing to bare my testimony in June! I think it went okay. Phew!

So women's conference. It was amazing and a break I desperately needed but didn't even know it. My main theme is to find little pieces of that restful feeling and splice them into my days so I don't crack. I have started getting up at 6am, and doing the meditation, prayer, scripture thing, and I just love it. I have also tried to get to the temple once a week, so far so good. For that I get up at 4:30am, and try to stay awake.

Randy is looking for a new job and would love any and all leads. It doesn't need to be anything fancy, as he is going back to school and we just need to keep a float till he graduates. Wish us luck.
And thank goodness I have my degree! yay education!

Get that girl some ice cream quick

Okay so I am a dental hygienist, so naturally my sworn enemy is sugar, right? Well its basically true, especially when it comes to my kids, I want them to have perfectly perfect teeth, what on earth is so terribly wrong with this? Nothing right? Right. So how come when Randy offers Krista a Dairy Queen ice cream cone if she gets 100% on her spelling does she suddenly turn into the spelling bee girl. I mean I saw a 45% turn around on her spelling test grade. In one week! Am I withholding the sugar that much? I mean really. And as happy as I am that we found her motivation should sugar really be it? I just have to just wonder at it all. and please pass Krista the ice cream. Quick!

Help I'm stranded

Okay so I don't really need help exactly, but ouch, I hate not having a car. I am definitely a get out of the house and into the world girl. My favorite day is errand day. I might just be crazy. My car just blew it's alternator and it's getting fixed this weekend but I feel like my alternator blew, not my car's. At least I have great friends and husband to take me around, like to work, you know so I can pay for the alternator that my car just can't seem to live without. Maybe its like that new jacket I just have to have. . .

He's a hard working little boy

I love the way Nathan gets out the mop every time I sweep. Then I have mixed feelings when he heads straight for the pile I've just swept. But one of the biggest smiles I've ever seen was when I let him help me mop the floor. I put his chubby little hands on the handle and covered them with mine. He looked at me with a thank you on his face. Our strokes together were so so painfully small, but we laughed and laughed and laughed and laughed. My sides are still feelin' it. I have the best job ever!

Jealousy hey hey Jealousy

So the biggest fit I think I ever saw my Nathan have was when I came to get him up from a nap with Maddie in my arms. What a cross look on his face. What a strange howl came out of this sweet boy's mouth. It's a good thing Tawnya knows her stuff and can juggle two babies at the same time. Tawnya came for a visit to my house this week, the brave girl does in deed juggle her babies. I don't really know how else to explain the manuvering I saw. I am at once in awe and a little jealous. Have a fabulous week. Look for new pictures soon!

Its been awhile

It's been awhile since I've caught up with you. I think the best way to end a quiet streak is to talk. So Hello. Again. Funny story, Nathan can say I love you. He has been saying it for a while now. It just took me quite a long time to figure it out though. But if you have ever heard one of those talking dogs say it you can get a general idea of just how it sounds. He doesn't use a w sound, he uses a lot of the L sound through it. Randy and I have even been using his version. Have I mentioned that I love being a mom to my three gorgeous children? See you much sooner. Tiff

click click click

The other day Nathan was sitting in between Randy and I. Randy and I gave each other some smooches and I noticed Nathan's eyes got really big. Well, next thing you know he grabs my face and gets his cute little lips really close to mine and clicks his tongue three times to sound like Dads loud kisses. So so cute. Talk about a fullness of joy.

Busy Busy

Well all I can think is that is doesn't slow down over here after Christmas like it has in the past. Nathan's first birthday party was a nice small family affair just the five of us. He is so adorable. I can't believe how clean and neat he was with his cake. Even when he dove in head first. I got a sing star game for our new years party and you can not believe how much fun we had. Sorry no video feed available at this time. Things are getting back to normal now so check back for good times.
